I have created a series of doll clothes which I’ll share with you soon. Let’s get started this week with this reusable diaper for dolls. I’m offering this pattern for free in two sizes: size small and large. The smallest size is designed for dolls measuring from 35 to 40 cm (13 ¾ – 15 ¾ in), and the largest size is for dolls measuring from 41 to 48 cm (16 – 19 in). This sewing pattern is not recommended for beginners as it requires good crafting experience.
You will need:
- 35cm (13 ¾ in) of printed fabric (I used flannel because it’s super soft)
- 35cm (13 ¾ in) of white quilted/fleece fabric (with those 2 lengths of fabric, you can make 4 diapers)
- White velcro (approx. 15cm (6 in) per diaper)
- Elastic band, 5mm wide (approx. 45cm (17 ¾ in) per diaper)
Place the pieces with right sides together (soft side of quilted fabric is the RS) and place elastic on marks, on the longer side. Length of elastic: twice 20cm (8 in) or for larger size twice 22 cm (8 ½ in).
Start sewing on the elastic that’s closer to you, back-tack and go around all the diaper (leaving a 1 cm – ½ in seam allowance), securing elastic on each mark with a back-tack. Stop sewing on last mark, which leave a hole to be able to turn the diaper inside out in next step. You should get something which looks like this:
Trim corners and turn inside out. Starting with the shorter side, over-stitch over elastic and all layers, making sure to stitch into elastic all along and push the gathered pleats to the center.
Go all around (without stopping), and over-stitch over hole to close it. Turn and stitch over the 2nd elastic. Here’s how it should look like:
Now you’ve made all the most difficult steps. All you need to do is stitch the velcro in place. Cut twice 5cm (2 in) - or twice 6cm (2 ¼ in) for larger size – of the male part (scratchy side). Stitch it onto smaller edges (scratchy side on fabric) as follows:
Then cut once 6cm (2 ¼ in) – or once 7 cm (2 ¾ in) – of the female side (soft side of velcro) and sew it to center of front, through all layers as follows:
Voilà! You have now created something that will mean hours of fun for your kids! You’ll see, they should love it! They can even play and wash them, so as to prepare them for reusable diapers. :)
I hope you’ll sew them in lots of various colors just like me. And feel free to share your great ideas following this suggestion !! Or send me pictures of your projects!!
