My youngest child has a bad tendency to make holes in his pants. If you’re like me, you probably think it would be a waste to discard them.
My suggestion: transform them into shorts. With the hot season coming along, it will be just perfect! You could also upcycle pants that will be too short for next winter, and thus make your kids use their clothes longer.
Start by tracing a straight line above the hole. In this example, the pants had nice cargo side pockets (which didn’t stop me at all, as you’ll see).
Then let’s cut! If your pants also have cargo pockets, I recommend sewing it in place to make the next steps easier.
Then overcast or sew a zigzag stitch along all edges, and sew hem.
Voilà! My son can now continue to enjoy wearing his favorite pants but as shorts! And you can see how the pocket, even though the bottom was cut, remains a nice decorative detail.
I hope this tutorial will inspire you to upcycle parts of your kid's winter wardrobe… They outgrow their clothes so quickly!
